It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our Trustee, Honorary Alderman William Egerton, affectionately known to us as Bill, on 12th September 2019.
Bill has been a rock and a stalwart to the We Love MCR Charity for many years, and only on the 4th September Bill was with us at our Strategy Workshop, giving sage advice and inspiration to fellow Trustees and charity staff.
Bill has been a lifelong public servant of Manchester. He first served as a Councillor in Beswick Ward, ultimately rising to be a young Leader of Manchester Council from 1982-1984, and then Lord Mayor in 1992-93. He also held numerous other roles, including Chair of North Manchester Healthcare Trust, Chair of Manchester’s Magistrates Bench, Deputy Lieutenant, Chair of Governors at St Peter’s High School, and Trustee of several charities – all with the aim of supporting people in Manchester.
Bill loved Manchester, the people, the buildings, its spirit and history – everything about the City.
In recent weeks Bill was thrilled that his son Paul was relocating within the United Nations Organisation to Geneva from New York, and he hoped that his grand-daughter would further her studies in the UK when she had completed her degree in New York. He has just spent the summer showing her his beloved Manchester. Bill was always passionate about his family and his city. And in everything he did, he was supported and encouraged by his wife Maureen for over 50 years.
Numerous bodies, charities and organisations will miss Bill’s knowledge, humour and support. Our Charity will certainly miss his clarity and commitment, and we send our gratitude and best wishes to his family. Thank you Bill.
Bill’s funeral takes place at 11am on 3rd October at St Joseph’s RC Church, Mossley.
