City In The Community Uses £30,000 of joint-funding from We Love MCR & Premier League to support Manchester’s young people.
In May of this year we ring fenced £100,000 of our Covid-19 Community Response Fund to specifically support children and young people across Manchester – many of whom have been hardest hit by the pandemic. We welcomed applications from organisations who could deliver services for children across Manchester, and the largest of these applications came from City In The Community (CITC) – Manchester City Football Club’s own charity, who have been doing great work in the Greater Manchester area since 1986. We awarded CITC a grant totalling £30,000 to support them providing a variety of vital resources to children across the city.
With joint funding from ourselves and the Premier League, CITC were able to embark on 3 brilliant initiatives:
- They worked with Manchester City Council to identify a priority book for Year 6 pupils purchasing 7,300 books from the National Literacy Trust meaning that every single Year 6 pupil in Manchester received a copy of the book! They also received a letter from the author who is doing follow up activities with the young people involved.
- They designed and printed over 4,000 printed resource packs which have been delivered to children aged between 2 and 16 across Manchester. The packs included a mix of physical and educational activities, literacy and numeracy, fun games, word searches, design challenges and nutritional messages in more than 60 pages! These were so important in a time when kids were home from school and restricted in activities.
- They created a £30,000 technology fund and identified young carers, who were put under particular stress during lockdown. The fund was for those who don’t have access to crucial resources like wi-fi, data, phones and laptops – the technology they need to stay connected with friends and family, access online lessons and to complete school or college work . By the time we spoke to CITC in July they had already provided support to over 80 of Manchester’s young carers!
We’re proud to have funded CITC to deliver such comprehensive and extensive support to keep the young people of our city safe, happy, entertained and connected. We Love Manchester definitely loves City In The Community!
