On Wednesday we will bid farewell to the Chair of We Love MCR Charity’s Board of Trustees, Cllr Abid Latif Chohan.
Cllr Chohan became Chair of We Love MCR Charity when he became Lord Mayor in May 2019. Normally this role is held for 12 months, but Covid-19 has meant that Abid’s term has been extended by 5 months. And what a 17 months in office it has been! – some highlights are here…
Every Charity relies on fundraising. Under Abid, we have raised £756,000 in gross income, which is a huge achievement.
And we use our funds to improve lives in Manchester. Over 17 months, we have awarded £956,000 in grants through our urgent Covid-19 Community Response Fund, to meet new needs created by the pandemic. We’re also delighted to have awarded £64,000 in Stronger Communities Grants to 31 community groups, at the very heart of their communities.
Our pioneering Manchester’s Rising Stars Fund has supported 30 young Mancunians by awarding over £22,000 in Grants to help them fulfil their ambitions for success. These are ambitious young people who have identified how they can make progress – and we have removed financial barriers stopping them from moving forward.
This means our total of grants awarded with Abid as our Chair has reached £1.04 million! We could not be any prouder, and we know we have improved lives and communities across Manchester through this work.
During Cllr Chohan’s tenure the charity have also supported 107 local people to attend our therapeutic family break programme at Ghyll Head Outdoor Centre on Windermere, and we’ve taken 14 young people through our 10-week Summer School programme, offering support and inspiration for their future ambitions.
