Councillor Tommy Judge was invested as the Lord Mayor of Manchester today. He becomes the new Chair of We Love MCR Charity, and will be in the Chair until May 2021.
“I’m thrilled to be leading We Love MCR as part of my role as Lord Mayor. I know the differences the charity makes to our local communities and I’m looking forward to developing and growing this work in 2021”.
We Love MCR is celebrating having distributed £970,000 to frontline organisations tackling problems cause by Covid-19, and is now planning how it can support our communities even further in 2021. Councillor Judge praised outgoing Lord Mayor Councillor Chohan for his leadership through such difficult times, remarking:
“these are big footsteps to follow in, and I’m sure I can count on his support as he hands over the reins.”
Read about those big footsteps in our previous news item about the departure of Councillor Abid Latif Chohan as Lord Mayor, who will still be a part of the We Love MCR team in his role as a trustee as ‘Former Lord Mayor’ for the duration of Councillor Judge’s Mayorship.
Ged Carter, Development Manager at We Love MCR added:
“I’m delighted to welcome Tommy as Chair of our Board. He’s already proven to be a great friend of the Charity, and I’m confident he’ll help us to attract even more support in future. If you’d like to join us as a supporter or charity partner, please get in touch by email on firstname.lastname@example.org – and help us to write Manchester’s next chapter”
We’re delighted to have Wythenshawe lad Tommy leading us in the directions we take as a charity over the next 18 months. In his first act as Lord Mayor, Councillor Judge bestowed upon another Wythenshawe lad, Marcus Rashford for his work on child food poverty, the City of Manchester Award saying:
“From one Wythenshawe lad to another, this is a truly memorable moment. We could never have known that Marcus was going to become the world-famous footballer that he is celebrated for today, but perhaps his recent campaign to feed needy young people will become his true legacy. The way he and his wonderful family has stood up for what they believe in, the way they have given a voice to the powerless has been remarkable to see. And the pride we feel in Wythenshawe for what he and his family have done is huge.
“So, it’s with great honour that as my first act as Lord Mayor of Manchester we bestow the City of Manchester Award to Marcus. Thank you for everything you have done for young people in this city and across the country.”
We LOVE Lord Mayor Councillor Tommy Judge, and we’re sure that you will too as you get to know him over the course of his tenure!
