We Love Manchester awards Mary* a grant to assist her in empowering herself through her passion.
Mary is a young woman who has endured things that no person should have to experience in the supposed safety of their own home. We were introduced to her via Saheli, an organisation in Manchester that uses their specialist knowledge to go above and beyond in supporting Black, Asian, minority ethnic and refugee women and their children who are fleeing domestic abuse. They have refuge accommodation for women who require temporary emergency accommodation due to domestic abuse and an outreach service to support women in the community settings who find themselves in abusive situations who need support and assistance to flee the situation or take steps to protect themselves without leaving.
Mary came to them in Spring of this year, 2020, and was offered a refuge place in Summer after fleeing abuse from her husband and his family. Thanks to the support and care of Saheli, Mary is in the process of being empowered and achieving career goals, by having successfully enrolled onto a Hair & Beauty Diploma Level 1. Due to her vulnerable situation she doesn’t have any income other than Universal Credit and is unable to support herself financially, which she hopes to overcome by completing her qualifications and creating a new, independent, safer life for herself.
We believe women and girls like Mary deserve every opportunity to carve their own successes and ambitions despite any injustices life throws at them, and they warrant all the support that can be given. Which is why we are fiercely proud to help this young Mancunian by awarding a grant to go towards her uniform and products required for the course.
In her own words:
“Thank you very much for providing me the kit and uniform for my course. I really appreciate your help and support as I would not be able to do the course without it and hopefully go on to find work. Kind regards, Mary”
We love Mary, and she has all our support and best wishes – absolutely a Manchester Rising Star!
