We Love MCR awarded a grant in August to The Place At Platt Lane for their ‘Story Of Me’ project, encouraging residents to talk to each other and reduce isolation. Today, 3rd October 2020, the project is launched!
The Place at Platt Lane also known as Fallowfield Library and Resource Centre provides local people with a range of activities to support well-being, learning, education, skills, employability and culture. The Place is an incredible community resource, ran by & for residents who saved Fallowfield Library from closure in 2014. The centre benefits all sections of the community from toddlers through to older residents and those from many different ethnic and ability backgrounds including those who are unemployed, low skilled, financially excluded and socially isolated.
Prior to lockdown the site has been a busy community asset with a door count from last year of 43,000 visits! They work with many groups with aims ranging from reducing social isolation for older members of the community, to a community grocers & even knitting sessions. In lockdown they’ve worked with volunteers, local councillors & council staff making sure the community was looked after. Providing food parcels, activities, signposting & befriending services. Vital stuff in times like these.
Their ‘Story Of Me’ project develops that community spirit by exploring residents stories, and encourages extended families and friendship groups to get to know each other even better by asking questions that aren’t just “what did you have for tea tonight Nan?”! They’ve designed gorgeous booklets that presents these questions and activities in an accessible way. Our funding went towards the printing of these booklets, which will be handed out to residents at The Place and via other means, but they’ve also created a digital copy that is free for all to download, just click this link to read more about the project in their own words and download the PDF file.
